Antec USB-Powered Notebook Cooler Review
The Antec USB-Powered Notebook Cooler ($29.98) is a solid 4 star laptop cooler that does exactly what the name says. It effectively keeps your laptops core temperature down through its ventilating system. How it works: The Antec Cooler allows for air to pass through from the computer to its fans. It pulls hot air from the laptop and releases it on a back vent. Laptop overheating is a huge problem and I’m a victim of it myself. All three of the laptops I’ve ever owned have ended up getting very hot to the touch after about a year. This may have contributed to all of their failures. That’s right, three laptops have completely broken to the point of being unusable on me and overheating is most likely a big contributor.
Now I know what you’re thinking, maybe I’m the culprit and you could be right but all I’ve ever done is use my laptop a lot. One did get coffee seep into it (on table surface level) by a fellow student when I had left the room so obviously that had something to do with the early demise of one laptop (it kept working for a few months afterwords). Anyways, back to the Antec.
There are two levels for the fans: high and low. Both are pretty quiet so an annoying humming in the background shouldn’t be a problem. The key here is this Notebook Cooler pulls air away from your laptop rather than blowing air at the laptop. That’s quite a difference among different laptop computer stand models. Also, the Antec Laptop Cooler is made of aluminum which promotes lower temperatures.
One problem some of you may have is this is only going to be effective if your computer vents air on the bottom. If not, don’t buy the Antec. Another noted detractor is the extremely bright blue LED light. This can be distracting and you might want to cover it with tape. One more thing is the USB cable is on the shorter side. If your port is on the left side of the laptop, you may need to buy a longer USB cord or an extender.
